As of October 18th, the total number of breaches stands at 1,103. Wow! This is an over 22% increase from 2016 (901 total reported breaches).
That number alone is staggering, but what is more disturbing is that those are only the numbers for people that reported breaches. How many more were quietly swept under the rug, potentially putting people’s identities at further risk?
Healthcare and General Business are still the largest targets for data breaches. According the the 2017 Identity Theft Resource Center Breach Report, the five industry sectors are as follows:
52.3% – General Business
27.2% – Medical/Healthcare
9.3% – Educational
6.3% – Banking/Credit/Financial
4.8% – Government
