Last week Hollywood Presbyterian Hospital confirmed they paid an astounding $17,000 to release access to patient information held ransom by malware.
Not only did the ransomware take down their ability to care for patients, but there is now very public embarassment by paying the ransom and notifying patients and the public. The most disheartening part of this is that with proper training this may have been prevented. In addition, solid disaster recovery backups would allow for not needing to pay the bad guys.
It’s still sad to see breaches happen when they are preventable.
